My 1966 MGB "Evelyn"by
Daniel Ellsworth (Dan) Brown

Photo of Danny and Phil Bove by the 1966 MGB

I am currently attending college to be an architect and have loved MGs my entire life. My grandfather and dad shared a 1954 MGTF which I grew to love. Dad let me take the TF to my prom which was starting to drizzle just as we drove up to the banquet hall. Dad let me borrow the car for a few weeks this past spring and it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I love driving the MG on mountain roads when everything is in blossom or a balmy night on the Jersey shore. There was always something special about MGs, they were not an expensive car but really were a true sports car that America loved first. I see the beauty of the little car that is so different than what is out there today.

Dad had introduced me to Phil Bove a number of years ago as he was having the MGTF fully restored. My dad would joke with me that it was time to visit "uncle" Phil. I always loved visiting his shop and seeing all the neat British sports cars. It was bitten by the MG bug and really wanted to get my own MG and I had always loved the look of the MGB and would love to have one that is painted "midnight blue." We visited Phil a number of times during the spring and summer and discussed with him what I should look for in buying a used MGB. I wanted a car that I could DRIVE and we would slowly start to fully restore it. We saw some real dogs out there that were rust buckets. Found a 1966 MGB close by that was owned by a member of the Positive Earth Drivers Club in Monmouth County, New Jersey. I liked the idea of buying the car from someone who was an MG enthusiast and not a used car speculator.

We needed to fix a gas leak in the rear SU carburetor, redo the brakes because it had a frozen caliper and replace the clutch master and slave cylinder. We just finished the job as I am writing this. Phil let me help out and showed me so much about my car that I should be aware of. He is one of the most wonderful human beings and the finest business man I have ever met. He is absolutely honest and lets you know exactly what kind of work needs to be done and what can be delayed.

I hope to drive the MG all over the place now that we have it in "good driving condition." I hope to make this my lifelong project like my grandfather and dad did with the MGTF. This is a dream come true for me and it could not have happened without Phil Bove. My Dad's right he is the best!

Sincerely,
Dan Brown
